Mizoram official warned for violating election code

Aizawl, 01-Dec-2013 : The Mizoram government has issued a warning to a senior official for violation of the election model code of conduct. The warning was issued at the direction of the Election Commission of India. Mizoram chief electoral officer Ashwani Kumar said that the project director of the state Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan (SSA) was found bungling while putting out an advertisement on the National Education Day. He said the official did not make any mistake in the wordings of the advertisement, but displaying the picture of the chief minister and the education minister in the advertisement tantamount to violation of the election model code of conduct.

"The Election Commission ordered that the erring official be issued a strict warning and the state education department had done so," he said.

The other allegation of violation of the model code of conduct was against state home minister R Lalzirliana who is the Congress candidate from Tawi constituency in Aizawl district, for allegedly distributing church testimonial during the hustings. Kumar said the matter was being looked into by the Election Commission of India and the commission would soon take a decision on it which would be in public domain.

Lalzirliana was accused of getting a testimonial from the Presbyterian Church at Armed Veng locality and distributed it in his constituency during electioneering. Moderator of the Mizoram Synod of Presbyterian Church of India Rev. Lalramliana Pachuau has clarified such testimonial should be only between two local churches and not meant for use in political campaigns.
