Aizawl, Jan 13: Mizoram Chief Minister Lal Thanhawla on Tuesday said they will never allow division of Mizoram on communal or ethnic lines as long as Congress is in power. He said this during the inauguration of the Congress Bhavan for the current year.
Addressing party workers at the Congress Bhavan, Lal Thanhawla said there was a mistake in an official press statement in connection with the proposal of official meeting as regard development of backward areas in the state.
The official statement according to Lal Thanhawla, stated that government officials along with officials of autonomous district councils held a meeting under the leadership of Planning Board vice chairman to evolve projects for drawing more development fund under NITI Aayog to develop sixth schedule areas in the North East region. The meeting proposed to evolve certain projects for all round development of Sialkal area, Sinlung Hills Development and Reang Development area accordingly which attention would be given to social development like road transport, public health, education and public employment. “A fund earmarked for development of people living in remote areas was mistakenly projected as for Reang Development Area development fund which was snowballed into controversy. However, there is no proposal for setting up Reang (Bru) Development area,” he said.
Lal Thanhawla said that the Congress Government would never take steps towards further division of the state on ethnic lines and regretted for some vested interest group twisting the matter (mistaken statement) for political advantage. “I would like to inform the people of Mizoram that we would never allow Mizoram to be divided on communal or ethnic lines as long as we rule,” he said.
“We are against ethnic politics and all political parties and student leaders should be careful not to flare up ethnic feelings,” he added.
Meanwhile, the largest civil organisation YMA and Mizo Zirlai Pawl have said that they strongly felt disappointment over the appearance of Reang Development Area in official statement as the matter is of serious concern. “Though the government has made corrigendum, the YMA find it difficult to remain calm over the statement,” CYMA general secretary Lalhmachhuana said.
