Home Minister Pu Lalchamliana inaugurated the International Workshop on Geodynamics and Advances in Geophysical Methods for Exploration and Geohazards at Pachhunga University College today

The workshop, organized by the Department of Geology & Geophysics, PUC, in collaboration with the Department of Geology, Govt. Zirtiri Residential Science College, aims to promote the exchange of knowledge and new advancements in the field of geodynamics and geophysical methods for exploration and geohazards.

During his address at the workshop's opening ceremony held at the PUC Seminar Hall, Pu Lalchamliana emphasized the importance of scientific research in understanding Mizoram's geography and potential hazards. He highlighted the significance of the workshop in fostering scientific collaborations and enhancing preparedness for potential disasters. The Minister also commended the efforts of the Department of Disaster Management & Rehabilitation and the Department of Geology, PUC, for their establishment of a broadband seismic station and their contributions to earthquake research.

Pu Lalchamliana further emphasized that such workshops play a crucial role in promoting scientific research and knowledge sharing. He expressed his gratitude to the workshop's resource person, Prof. Mrinal K. Sen, Associate Director of the Institute of Geophysics at the Jackson School of Geosciences, University of Texas at Austin, USA, for sharing his expertise and facilitating the workshop's sessions.

Dr. Shiv Raj Gurung, Head of the Department of Geophysics, PUC, provided an overview of the workshop and expressed gratitude to the college principal, Prof. H. Lalthanzara, for his support in organizing the event. The keynote address was delivered by Prof. Mrinal K. Sen, who spoke about the importance of geophysics and seismology in understanding the Earth's processes and the application of research findings in disaster management.

The workshop features presentations of 12 research papers on various topics related to geology and geophysics. Notably, Dr. Laldinpuia, Associate Professor at MZU, presented a paper titled "Utilization of LiDAR and DGPS for Landslide Mapping in Tuipuiral" on June 22, 2020, highlighting the use of advanced technologies for landslide assessment.

Pachhunga University College has been actively organizing national and international conferences, workshops, and seminars, with 20 events held so far. The establishment of a Broadband Seismic Station at Pachhunga University College, as well as ongoing research activities in earthquake monitoring, further contribute to Mizoram's geophysical knowledge. Additionally, the college's Hunthar leitlahniam (Disaster Management) program plays a vital role in disaster preparedness and mitigation efforts.
