Solid Waste Management Centre at Tuirial: A Model for Sustainability

The Solid Waste Management Centre at Tuirial was constructed as part of the North East Capital Cities Development Implementation Programme (NERCCDIP) under the State Investment Programme Management and Implementation Unit (SIPMIU) of the Urban Development & Poverty Alleviation Department. Initially inaugurated in 2019, the centre was officially handed over to the Aizawl Municipal Corporation (AMC) in 2022.

Since its inception, the centre has played a crucial role in handling waste from across the city. The AMC employs 35 daily workers who ensure the smooth operation of the facility. Around 190 garbage trucks collect approximately 119.42 tonnes of waste daily from Aizawl, which is sorted and processed at the centre.

Waste Segregation and Recycling Efforts in Aizawl

The waste collected is categorized into wet and dry waste. On average, 89.09 tonnes of wet waste and 30.33 tonnes of dry waste are processed daily at the SWMC. Notably, 7.98 tonnes of dry waste are recycled and sold to 11 AMC-approved scrap dealers. Wet waste is converted into manure through a Mechanical Compost Plant, which has been operational since March 2024.

Governor’s Vision for a Greener Aizawl

Governor Shri Indra Sena Reddy Nallu urged the departments to continue their efforts to improve the waste management infrastructure and increase public awareness about the importance of recycling and proper waste disposal. By working together, the goal is to make Aizawl a model for sustainable waste management in the region, contributing to a cleaner, greener environment for future generations.
