Study Highlights Rising Heart Disease Risk Among Mizoram's Tribal Population

Aizawl, Oct 6 (Zoram News): A recent study has revealed a sharp rise in cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk among Mizoram's tribal population, once believed to be relatively protected due to their active lifestyle. The alarming findings, published by the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), emphasize the growing health concerns in Mizoram’s tribal communities.

The study, conducted by experts from Assam and Mizoram, analyzed socio-demographic and biochemical data from 1,812 individuals across various tribal villages in both states. It highlighted that tribal men in Mizoram, especially those over the age of 35 and overweight, are at a significantly higher risk of developing heart diseases over the next decade compared to their counterparts in Assam.

Key risk factors contributing to the rise in cardiovascular disease include high blood pressure (both systolic and diastolic) and low levels of high-density lipoproteins (HDL) among Mizoram’s tribal males. The research pointed out that these factors are more prevalent in Mizoram than in Assam.

Lifestyle differences between the two states also play a role in the varied health risks. While smoking rates are notably high in Mizoram, with 24.5% of the population affected, alcohol consumption is more widespread in Assam, at 22.6%. Additionally, the Body Mass Index (BMI) analysis revealed that 55.9% of Mizoram’s tribal population is classified as obese, compared to 21.9% in Assam.

Experts attributed the lower CVD risk in Assam to the high levels of physical activity among its tribal communities, many of whom are engaged in agriculture, which contributes to their healthier metabolic profile.

The study has raised red flags regarding the increasing prevalence of diabetes, obesity, hypertension, and dyslipidaemia among Mizoram’s tribal population—all major contributors to heart disease. Health experts are calling for urgent public health interventions to promote healthier lifestyles and reduce the escalating cardiovascular risk in the region.

With Mizoram’s rising heart disease rates, the need for immediate action is clear to protect the health of its tribal communities.
